Jigang Bao

Award

  • On October 19th, Professor Bao Jigang, from the School of Tourism Management at Sun Yat-sen University, was officially awarded the 16th UNWTO Ulysses Prize during the 25th UNWTO General Assembly held in Uzbekistan. Professor Bao Jigang is the first Chinese scholar to receive this prestigious award since its establishment. Professor Bao Jigang stated in his subsequent speech "Receiving this award is a testament to the international recognition of the overall level of internationalization in Chinese tourism education and research within the academic community. It highlights our progress in promoting global tourism knowledge and expertise."

School event

  • The "8th China Training Camp for Tourism Management Doctoral Student" jointly initiated by the Tourism Education Branch of the China Tourism Association, the School of Tourism Management at Sun Yat-sen University, and the School of Hotel and Tourism Management at The Hong Kong Polytechnic University, was successfully held, from August 1st to 7th, 2023, in Zhuhai. This training camp, hosted by the School of Tourism Management, Sun Yat-sen University, featured a total of 12 specialized lectures and 8 research design/paper-sharing discussion sessions, attracting more than 110 doctoral students and young teachers specializing in tourism management for participation. This is the eighth training camp, with a two-year hiatus due to the pandemic. The activity was initiated by Prof. Haiyan Song and Prof. Jigang Bao who take turns organizing it annually. Previous camps have seen nearly 500 participants in total.

David L. Edgell

Book

  • Dave Edgell and his co-author Bonnie Kogos have just finished a very special new book titled “The Worldly Travelers: These Lives and Journeys Changed the World”. The worldly travelers in the book include Herodotus, Marco Polo, Ibn Battuta, Zheng He, Christopher Columbus, Jeanne Baret, Charles Darwin, Mark Twain, Nain Singh, Charles Lindbergh, Amelia Earhart, and Yuri Gagarin. These fascinating accounts of these worldly travelers are the true events of real people who traveled and changed and shaped the world in which we live. These few men and two women changed the course of human history resulting from their curiosity, courage, an extraordinary travel, risking their lives and livelihoods in pursuit of their dreams.

Kit Carson Jenkins

Announcement
  • Professor Kit Jenkins is currently working in China contracted to Hangzhou City University where he has helped to establish and now develop the International School of Culture and Tourism. Kit spends five months of the year in China and then ‘snowbirds’ to Chiang Mai, Thailand where he is associated with Chiang Mai University.
Book
  • He has just completed a book on “The Formulation of Tourism Policy and Implementation Strategies: A Chinese Perspective” with a Chinese co-author which will be published in English and Chinese and which is now with the publisher.

  • Professor Marina Novelli is thrilled to announce her new appointment as Professor of Marketing and Tourism at Nottingham University Business School (NUBS), The University of Nottingham - starting 13th October 2023. This new appointment comes after 21 years at the University of Brighton, where she made major contributions through her role as REF2021 panellists, extensive research and consultancy work and teaching innovations. She is excited to join such an esteemed team of colleagues in a globally recognised Marketing Department and Business School. She is looking forward to contributing to NUBS’ research and consultancy directive, its fabulous marketing and tourism programmes and taking her passion to new heights.

 


 

Noam Shoval

  • Prof. Noam Shoval, from Hebrew University of Jerusalem, co-hosted the "European Tourism Research in the Age of Sustainability and Technology" conference with Modul University Vienna. The conference, held on September 6, 2023, at Modul University Vienna in Vienna, Austria, brought together delegates from the tourism industry and academia. It was a collaborative effort between Modul University Vienna and the European Forum at the Hebrew University of Jerusalem. The event featured approximately 30 research papers presented by scholars from 15 different countries.

 


 

Geoffrey Wall

Book
  • Geoff Wall has co-authored a book with former student Li Yang (Western Michigan University) entitled “Ethnic Tourism: Impacts, Challenges and Opportunities". This book presents a range of case studies from diverse well-known ethnic destinations which reveal the various outcomes and changes engendered by ethnic tourism, such as the commodification of ethnic culture, the exploitation of minority peoples by outsiders, and the impact of wider forces of modernization and national integration policies. It summarizes what has been done so far and suggests initiatives to increase the contribution of tourism to the economic development and quality of life of ethnic communities. It brings together a diversity of perspectives that are not currently readily available in one location.
